#16 Drastically Change Your Hairstyle

“A woman’s preference in hairstyles is a personal thing, but it certainly isn’t private. Short of running around in a burlap sack with a face full of clown paint, nothing you can do to your appearance will attract more attention than a change in your ’do—especially a dramatic one. And nothing will elicit more comments from people you know. (When was the last time someone said, “Wow, you changed your shoe style”?)

Hubert Givenchy once said, “Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows herself.” When you shock people with a different cut, it can also be a sign that they really don’t know you. Or maybe that’s your point.

Here’s her story: “As part of a war protest, artist Erin O’Brien set up a Peace Salon in front of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on the Friday before Veterans Day, offering buzz cuts,” says Yost, who is forty-one. “My brother is a marine who served in Iraq. I chose to get a buzz cut as a sign of solidarity with him and other soldiers risking their lives, visibly showing the effect the war has on soldiers’ families…”
