#23 Get Hypnotized
“Make fun of it if you want, but women who’ve been hypnotized know the truth: A trance can be better than good sex and a long nap combined. Undergoing hypnosis is one of the most deeply relaxing, stress-relieving things you can do—and yes, it really can help you get over your nail-biting habit, fear of flying, writer’s block, and so on.
Worried that you’ll wind up barking like a dog or pulling down your pants in public? If you do make a spectacle of yourself, it won’t be because you’ve been hypnotized. Even in a trance, you’re awake enough to reject any suggestion that you don’t want to follow. “You’re aware of things going on, of sounds and sensations,” explains Nancy, who’s forty-seven. “But another part of you is completely divorced from those sensations and from any anxiety you have in your life. If my nose itches, I’ll say to myself that my nose itches, but I don’t feel like I need to scratch it.”
Nancy sought hypnosis because she was so stressed out about a public-speaking engagement that she couldn’t sleep. Something was wrong with the speech she’d written, but she couldn’t figure out what it was. Her first session began with deep-breathing exercises. Then the hypnotherapist put a quarter in her upturned palm and told her that when her hand moved on its own and dropped the quarter, she would be in a trance. She had Nancy close her eyes and picture herself walking down a road, passing numbered signposts as she went. As the therapist guided her through this walk, Nancy relaxed, and at the tenth signpost, her hand started jerking around and the quarter fell….”
