“The one and only time I used a personal shopper, I was in my mid-thirties and desperate. My editor was sending me to Nashville to attend a symposium held by Vice President Gore—with only two days’ notice. I had a one-year-old baby whom I was nursing at the time, which is to say that I didn’t have any decent business clothes that still fit. So I called the personal shopping service at Saks Fifth Avenue, told them my size and what I needed, and ran the eight blocks from my office to the store.

When I arrived, a shopper—my shopper—was waiting for me with a dressing room full of clothes. Within five minutes I had run through all of them; the shopper put them back on hangers as fast as I took them off. Once she saw my body in person, she went running back to the floor for different cuts and sizes. It was like having a very efficient, nonjudgmental mom in the dressing room with me.

After twenty minutes, I had a pale green Michael Kors suit—reduced, reduced, reduced—and a pair of black pumps (yes, she ran down to the shoe department, too). My shopper even arranged for the suit to be altered overnight. What did I pay for this fabulous service? Absolutely nothing. Department stores actually give it away….”
