“In the 1945 movie A Place of One’s Own, the place in question is a haunted mansion in the English countryside. Memorable title, but nothing you’d wish for in your own life. In Michael Pollan’s memoir A Place of My Own, the place is a hut in the woods that he builds as a personal sanctuary. That’s more like it. He writes, “I wanted not only a room of my own, but a room of my own making. I wanted to build this place myself.”

Perhaps you’d like to do the same: Create a sacred space that you can retreat to for solace, solitude, and spiritual connection.

Your reason for creating one is undoubtedly personal (isn’t that the point?) and unique to your own circumstances. But the one thing that all sacred spaces have in common is their purpose: They allow you to be alone with your feelings. They’re not sacred if your spouse, children, or plumber intrude, so if you live with other people, you may have to reserve time when you can be left completely alone.

Sacred spaces can occupy a large piece of real estate—a house, a room, or a clearing in the woods behind your back yard. More often than not, however, your corner of the universe is literally that: a nook or cranny somewhere in your home; a cozy area for your thoughts and prayers, and the things you put there to help preserve them….”
